29–31 May 2025 | Dushanbe, Tajikistan

Organized by the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in partnership with UNESCO, WMO, UN, UNDP, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the recent High-Level International Conference on Glaciers Preservation successfully united senior representatives from international institutions alongside passionate experts and advocates worldwide. Together, they reaffirmed a shared commitment to confronting one of today’s most urgent environmental challenges.

The conference exceeded expectations in both its organization and substantive discussions. Across numerous sessions, participants raised critical concerns, fostered meaningful dialogue, and reached a powerful consensus that this is a global challenge demanding a collegial and collaborative approach.

ISTC’s Role and Reflections

The International Science and Technology Center (ISTC), actively engaged in Tajikistan, has played a vital role in supporting glacier preservation and climate resilience initiatives. Through a variety of regional, national, and collaborative project proposals, ISTC has provided valuable expertise and innovative solutions addressing this complex issue.

Key contributions from ISTC include:

Empowering local scientists and policymakers: By funding training programs and workshops, ISTC fosters the development of data-driven strategies for climate adaptation tailored to local needs.

Facilitating technology exchange: ISTC promotes the deployment of cutting-edge tools such as remote sensing technologies and climate modeling software, which enable precise monitoring of glacier dynamics and improved forecasting of environmental risks.

Through these efforts, ISTC continues to strengthen scientific capacity and policy integration, supporting Tajikistan’s leadership in addressing climate change impacts and safeguarding vital glacier ecosystems.

The WRHM2CA project plays a vital role in addressing climate change impacts across Central Asia by enhancing regional water monitoring systems and expanding laboratory capacities focused on uranium legacy sites in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.

Through a network of precise, cost-effective, and compatible sensors and lab equipment tailored to each country, it creates a robust data system ready to aid in environmental crises.

Seamlessly integrated into national Environmental Security frameworks, this initiative empowers better collaboration and deeper insight into protecting natural resources and critical infrastructure from the evolving challenges of climate change.
